Retinal Conditions
The retina is the nerve layer at the back of the eye that senses light and helps to send images to the brain. Retinal swelling, tearing or blood vessel leakage can result from any number of things including aging, physical traumas, diabetes, and other diseases. Swelling of the retina can produce blurred vision and/or retinal scarring.
Retinal Surgery
Retinal surgery can repair the eye and restore some vision loss while addressing specific issues such as retinal swelling, tearing or blood vessel leakage. In the event of vessel damage produced by diabetes, retinal surgery can seal off leaking blood vessels and reduce vision loss by up to 75%.
Surgery can prevent or diminish swelling, repair tears or seal blood vessels in the retina. The general goal of retinal surgery is to prevent future swelling and scarring and to prevent further need for surgical intervention. In many cases, vision can be restored, depending on the initial diagnosis. In all cases, it is important to be seen and treated quickly.
